I have been reading The Cross by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones and it has been providing fodder both for a preaching series on the Cross as well as this week’s Good Friday Service. Lloyd-Jones preached a series of sermons on one verse, namely Galatians 6:14 where Paul declares,

But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world (KJV)

These sermons by Lloyd-Jones are saturated with the love of God in Christ on the cross and one quickly realizes that such cross-centered preaching is lacking today. Today there is an attempt by some ministers of the gospel to avoid the great doctrines of sin, righteousness, judgment, substitutionary atonement, wrath, justification and many others.. But the cross is everything and apart from Christ’s saving work on the cross we are a lost, condemned lot.

One point that convicted me as a preacher of the gospel was this:

If my preaching is not an offense to the natural man, I am misrepresenting it.  If it something that makes him say how beautiful, how wonderful, what a tragedy, what a shame, I have not been preaching the cross truly (45).

This week of all weeks, let us survey the cross. Let us take a good hard look at it and worship God for his love to us in Christ.
